The New York State has a scheme of examinations in place for assessing student’s proficiency and readiness for college education, which the board of Regents has jurisdictions over. Management of curriculum, instruction, pupil assessment and far-reaching effort to elevate the quality of education has been the Regent’s most critical role for many years. In the mid-1800s, the first Regents exam in New York took place as well as the rendered new law to authorize Regents to give academic tests as a standard for highschool graduation and college entry. From the outset, the tests have been effective predictors of college success based on studies done. Centuries later, it is still the gauge of performance throughout New York’s education system.

At present, the Regents are identified as a series of tests that New York students have to go through to receive their high school diploma and assess competency in college. Evidently, the tests derive from core topics that includes Global Studies, Math, English and History to name some. Diplomas are granted right after an individual passes with a score of 65 and up on the five Regents exams which comprise of Integrated Algebra, a History and Government exam, Global History and Geography, Science and an English exam. For students who require an advanced Regents diploma, passing a 2nd math and science exam as well as a foreign language exam are essential and the assessment facilities are offered across New York State. The students taking Regents must take the tests for 3 hours, apart from the English, Science and foreign language exams since they have their own test length.
